London Maternity Photographer: our top tips on your maternity shoot
How often do you look back on old photos? To me, the magic of photography is that it allows us to forever capture a moment in time that can never be repeated. Whether that’s a wedding, a holiday or another of life’s milestones, fabulous imagery allows us to record things that can never be repeated. With my London maternity photographer hat on today, I am talking about maternity shoots and why these should become part of your photographic life story.
If having a family has been a part of your dream, the months of being pregnant can feel like the build up to Christmas! You’re looking forward to your new arrival and, just like getting married, your life is about to change forever. More and more couples are choosing to commission photographs that capture this special time and maternity shoots are becoming more and more popular.
But why? Well, we’ve all become so much more visually aware recently. Thanks to social media and our love of Instagram and Pinterest, we’re seeing so many images that show us just how gorgeous maternity shoots can be.
And, quite often by the time you’ve reached this stage, you’re also aware of the beauty and brilliance of professional photography. It’s highly likely that you’ll have experienced the joys of working with a photographer for your own wedding and possibly on your engagement shoot too. You might well feel more relaxed in front of the camera than you ever thought you could and you might also love the idea of adding to your professional family album with photographs that capture your pregnancy in all its glory.
So, what do you need to know about maternity shoots? Firstly, just like your wedding photos, there are no rules. If you want to hold your shoot at home, in a park, on the beach or in a location that’s special to you, you absolutely can. As you’ll have heard with your wedding and engagement photos, just do whatever suits your style. These are photos that reflect you as a couple and celebrate this huge life event so make sure that they reflect you.
Another important consideration is when to have your shoot. Typically, 28-36 weeks is a great time if you’re carrying one baby but you might want to bring this forward a little if twins are on the horizon. If you’re expecting double trouble, aim to book your shoot around 26-32 weeks. These dates will make sure that you’re looking beautifully pregnant for your photos but you’ll still find posing comfortable.
While we’re talking about posing, what works well for maternity shoots? Well, now’s the time to get yourself back on Pinterest and start having a look around for shots that you like. Some women are super happy to bare almost all and others don’t want to do that. Whatever you want is absolutely fine because this is your shoot and your moment.
That said, there are some poses that are almost quintessential maternity shots. Having your hands, and possibly your partner’s hands, on your belly will always work well. We’ll always find the most flattering looks so we’ll experiment to see what looks best and don’t worry – if you’re not totally in love with your pregnant body, I promise you that we’ll find poses that will make you change your mind!

Here are a few more tips for your maternity shoot that might help you plan the perfect session:
- If you’ve already got a little one, decide whether you want them to be in the photos or not. Obviously, including a young child in the shoot will impact what’s possible, especially in terms of location and duration!
- Think carefully about your location – you might love a certain stretch of river but if the walk there is going to make you feel uncomfortable or tired before the shoot has even started, it might not be the ideal spot.
- You might like to think about booking a hair and makeup artist so you know that you’re looking your best for the shoot.
- I’ve mentioned that you should definitely wear what you want but keep in mind that clingy clothes are actually really flattering for maternity shoots and you’ll DEFINITELY be able to see your bump!
- Remember that the focus of the shoot is you and your gorgeous bump. You really don’t need to think about props and added extras.
